Andrew Sandwick, clarinetist

A native of Chicago, IL, Clarinetist Andrew Sandwick joined the San Francisco Ballet Orchestra in December 2015, accepting his position while still a Masters of Music candidate at Rice University in Houston, Texas.  As a student at Rice, Andrew trained under renowned clarinetist, Richie Hawley.  In 2014, he completed his Bachelor’s Degree in Clarinet Performance at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, where he graduated summa cum laude under the tutelage of Yehuda Gilad.

Andrew’s many honors and awards include USC’s 2014 Mitchell Lurie Award for Outstanding Achievement in Clarinet, the 2015 Gino B. Cioffi Memorial Prize and Stanley Chapple Fellowship at Tanglewood, third prize in the 2015 Vandoren Emerging Artist Competition, and first prize in the 2012-13 Pasadena Showcase House Instrumental Competition.

During the summers, Andrew has received fellowships to attend the Tanglewood Music Center, Aspen Music Festival and School, National Repertory Orchestra, and the Sarasota Music Festival. Andrew’s other principal teachers include David Howard, Susan Warner, Burt Hara, Joaquin Valdepeñas, and Barbara Drapcho.
